Tonight my wife asked me about pilates in the US, and some other thing called gyrotonics. She wanted to try them in the US. The reasoning being she felt that pilates and gyrotonic in Japan were not the same as in the US. She had seen this with ballet in Japan.

I went onto google and searched for gyrotonic and pilates in Boston to find out what the rates were. I went to at least 6 different websites that all had links for ‘rates’. Guess what? No rates! Just a message saying to call the studio for more information.

I don’t understand this? You have a website, the purpose is to get information out to the general public. You give them a teaser link that gets their hopes up about finding rates, and you dash their dreams by giving them a boat load of crap, and forcing them to call you and listen to your sales pitch? WTF? Really? Can we get past this bullshit finally? I am so sick of just wanting to know how much a class or something is. Why on earth can’t they list the price? It’s obnoxious and ignorant. This is the internet age. List your RATES!!!

some studios vary their pricing based on who the instructor is, but the instructors may not always be available. plus the whole health club weirdness in pricing.

anyway i found this one:
http://www.upwardspiralstudio.com/fees.html

you may also want to check out west coast pricing. here's one from santa monica, ca which seems really clear:
http://www.oceanpilates.com/oceanpilates_rates.html.

here's a finder for gyrotronic studios around the world:
https://www.gyrotonic.com/SimpleStudioFinder.aspx

and healthworks includes various mat-based pilates classes (up to 20-30 people in class depending on which studio is used) as a part of their regular class schedule so you really don't know the per-class price. if you wanted to come as a one-time walk-in to the club iirc, it's $20. reformer classes are only available at certain locations and are based on the specialty group training price. Specialty Group Training Rates: 4 Session Series- $81 ($78 Brookline, $65 Salem); 8 Session Series- $155 ($147 Brookline, $65 Salem); 12 Session Series- $220 ($209 Brookline, $170 Salem). class size in specialty group training is about 8-12 people depending on if they have enough apparatus.

for one-on-one personal training, here is healthworks' price list. http://healthworksfitness.com/fitness/rates.php choose a location to get their list. (note that not all levels have pilates instructors - you'd have to select your trainer when you sign up.)

hope that all helps!

Traditionally, Pilates was not a class, but a 'working out on a special machine' thing with a trainer. It may be the places you are finding are like that, hence the call us for rates.

I've found the group class prices around here to be similar to yoga ($10-$20, depending on the place and how many classes you are purchasing).

She could also probably find some US Pilates DVDs.

Any studio banks on their ability to give you the hard sell. They can't do that passively, you have to engage them first so they can con you into a membership.
